The Rent Control Law applies only within Council-of-Ministers-declared control zones

Rule record · last verified 22 September 2026

In force. Start date not confirmed in this record.

Rule

TRNC's Rent Control Law 17/1981 applies its tenant protections only within Council-of-Ministers-declared 'control zones', not nationwide.[1]

Exceptions

  • This rule covers the zone-based applicability mechanism itself, directly read from Article 3(1). It excludes the specific current list of declared zones — this rests only on secondary/journalistic sources suggesting three old city centres and a possible 2008 partial exemption, neither confirmed against the actual Council of Ministers decree, which could not be extracted from an image-based source. Do not treat any specific zone list as settled.
