Rule
No person may drive a motor vehicle on a TRNC road without a valid third-party insurance policy covering them. Driving uninsured is punishable by up to 3 times the monthly minimum wage or up to 1 year's imprisonment, with possible court-ordered licence disqualification (minimum 6 months for a first offence, 12 months for a repeat offence). Minimum coverage includes death, bodily injury and emergency medical treatment costs (uncapped in the base Law's own text) and property damage, currently capped at 1,200,000 TL per accident or chain of accidents as of a 25 February 2026 Regulation. Passenger-transport vehicles (buses/minibuses) carry separate, higher Euro-denominated death/injury minimums.[1][2]
Exceptions
- Base Law text was read from a non-governmental insurance-sector mirror (web.kksbm.org), not mevzuat.gov.ct.tr directly.
- The 1,200,000 TL property-damage figure is explicitly volatile, revised frequently by Regulation — treat as dated to 25 February 2026, not a permanent fact.
- The passenger-transport Euro minimums are the Law's own historical uprating figures (through 2013) and have likely been further revised by a later Regulation not checked here.
